Art of Africa

In this gallery you will see art created by many indigenous peoples of sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is the term used to describe the area of the African continent which lies geographically on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. Due to the diversity of cultures in sub-Saharan Africa, art from this region has a great deal of variety. However, we can identify common traits of much of the art of sub-Saharan Africa including: the human image is a favored subject, artists use intense color, three-dimensional works and sculpture are more popular than paintings, and abstraction is preferred over realism. The sub-Saharan African indigenous peoples also consider that art makes useful objects more beautiful.
